To be honest, I've had a somewhat difficult relationship with mint chocolate crinkle cookies. One of my older sisters started making these cookies around the holidays when she was in High School. I'm four years younger than her and being the good little sister I was, I hated everything she made, wore, or looked at.

My sister ended up making these crinkle cookies every year and every year I grew to hate them more and more. Now that we have gotten older, we don't see each other for Christmas every year. The strong, teenage anger/hate I had for my sister also disappeared. Lucky, huh?

I realized that I also had to make amends with those mint chocolate crinkle cookies of hers. Her recipe was definitely not vegan. So I had to adapt. The results: absolutely amazing!

Do you know how sometimes veganized recipes taste horrendous? Well, this vegan mint chocolate crinkle cookie recipe actually tastes better than the refined sugar, refined flour, dairy, and egg cookie recipe. You're very welcome ;)

It also doesn't matter what you call them. Crinkle, crackle, snow-topped...as long as they end up in your mouth :)

Ingredients

  • 2Bananaspureed
  • 1 ½cups300g Vegan Chocolate Chips¾ of a cup (150g of those chocolate chips melted)
  • 1teaspoonVanilla Extract
  • ¾of a teaspoon Mint or Peppermint extract
  • 6tablespoonsVegan Butter or Coconut Oilmelted 80 g
  • 1 ½cups190g Whole Wheat Flour or All-Purpose Flour
  • ¼teaspoonSalt
  • of a cup Whole Cane Sugar or Sucanat120g (alternatively use 1 cup granulated sugar)
  • 1 ½teaspoonsbaking powder
  • Powdered sugarNot all powdered sugars are vegan. This is!

Instructions

  1. Puree Banana and mix together with melted chocolate chips, vanilla extract, melted butter, and peppermint extract.

  2. Sift together flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Using a wooden spoon, stir together with chocolate banana mixture. Mix in remaining (not melted!) chocolate chips, wrap in plastic wrap and chill in fridge for at least an hour.

  3. Preheat oven to 350 F (175 C).

  4. Roll dough into tablespoon sized balls, roll in powdered sugar, and place on a cookie sheet.

  5. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes.Cookies should be slightly underbaked.

  6. Remove cookies from the oven and allow them to cool for 5 minutes on the cookie sheet before transferring them to a cooling rack.

Recipe Notes

1.) The longer you let the dough chill the better. Don't attempt to make these cookies without chilling. You won't get that crinkle cookie effect. I like letting the dough chill overnight but an hour will work too if you refrigerator is cold.

Once you've eaten all the vegan crinkle cookies, make some other treats fitting for the holidays :) Here are a few of my favorites!

Hi Lindsay, I haven't tried making these gluten-free and would hate to suggest a flour combination for you to try and have it not work out. I find this guide to be helpful! Hopefully, it can help you as well.

FAQs

Why didn't my crinkle cookies crack? ›

Why didn't my chocolate crinkle cookies crack? The most common reason for cookies that don't crack is either that the oven was not hot enough or the baking powder was expired.

Why are my vegan chocolate chip cookies flat? ›

Why are my vegan cookies flat? Likely because you flattened the cookies before baking them. Make sure you have nice round balls of dough on your cookie sheet and do not flatten them at all. If you did this and you still find your cookies are a bit flat, it is likely due to the vegan butter brand you are using.

Why are my crinkle cookies not crinkling? ›

The signature crinkle effect happens when the cookies spread and crack as they bake. If your cookies aren't crinkling, it might be because the dough is too warm (try chilling it for longer before baking), or the oven temperature might be too low (ensure your oven is correctly preheated).

Why are vegan cookies dry? ›

If you think vegan baked goods are dry and crumbly, you probably haven't had one that's been made with the right fat (or the right amount of fat), according to Konya. Butter is what makes traditional baked goods so darn tasty—as well as helps keep it all together—so you can't merely eliminate it and hope for the best.

Why are my vegan cookies spreading? ›

If your cookies are spreading too much in the oven, chances are you are under-measuring flour or over-measuring your butter. If you do one or the other, there is not enough flour to hold butter inside cookies and butter melts fast and leaks out of the cookies.

Why are my vegan cookies so crumbly? ›

Wrong flour = wonky dough = crumbly cookies

You need some gluten to keep cookies tender, so using dough that are lower in protein will cause problems. I'm looking at you cake flour, gluten-free flour, and almond flour.

Are vegan cookies actually healthy? ›

Depending on the recipe, and more specifically how much refined sugars they contain vegan cookies probably aren't the healthiest option when it comes to a sweet treat. Opting for a recipe that uses natural fruit-sugars to sweeten them could be the healthiest option.

What do vegan cookies not have? ›

These cookies are vegan, so there is no milk, butter or egg in them. They are gluten-free, so we don't use wheat, spelled or rye.

Why are Oreo cookies not vegan? ›

The longer answer. As the Oreo FAQ page states, while Oreos are indeed veggie-friendly, they are not strictly vegan as 'Oreo have milk as cross-contact and therefore they are not suitable for vegans'.

Why aren't my cookies crackly? ›

Issues with cracking usually derive from the sugar coating, not enough or expired baking powder or baking soda, or the oven temperature isn't hot enough. Solution: Granulated sugar is more effective at drying the surface than powdered sugar.

Why are my crinkle cookies hard? ›

Most cookies are soft and flexible, so the dough evenly expands as the cookies bake. In crinkle cookies, however, the powdered sugar dries out in the oven, creating a hard outer shell that is not flexible. As the cookie expands, it cracks the rigid powdered sugar, producing an attractive crinkly, cracked exterior.

Why didn't my Snickerdoodles crack? ›

Cracking occurs from several chemical reactions during the baking process. If some of your cookies aren't cracking, it could be because those dough balls were less round than others, the dough became too warm, your oven isn't heating evenly, or (most likely) the cinnamon sugar coating wasn't applied as thoroughly.

What makes cookie dough crack? ›

There are many reasons why your cookie dough may be crumbly. The most obvious culprit: not enough liquid to keep the dough together. Double check all liquid ingredients.
