Green thickies have just got even more portable. Enter the Green Granola Bar Recipe! You can now have your green smoothie in bar form!

I have wanted to make a green smoothie bar for such a long time and I’ve only recently got around to it. So after testing various recipes, I finally have a granola bar recipe that I am happy with and I’m sure you’re going to love it.

Green thickies are already fairly portable. You throw your big filling smoothie into a massive container and drink it wherever you are. It’s a meal on the run. But, what if you want something even more portable, smaller, more compact, longer lasting but still want your fresh dose of daily raw energising greens, nutritiousfruit, protein packed nuts/seeds, and filling oats. You’ve come to the right place today as this recipe ticks all the boxes. Did I mention it also tastes sweet, gorgeous and not a hint of any taste of greens? This bar doesn’t taste healthy, but it is. You can give it to your kids, friends and family and they’ll be none the wiser that this moreish granola bar contains anything even remotely healthy. You can rest assured there are no nasties lurking in this bar, and it comes together pretty quickly.

Raw Granola Bar Recipe with sneaky greens

This granola bar recipe is chocolate and cherry flavoured which is one of my favourite combinations, but it’s a very flexible bar. You cansubstitutethe cherries for any other fruit and leave out the chocolate completely. It will still work. You can also replace the seeds with nuts or oats, add in any mild greens you want or leave them out altogether. The choices are endless.

You also have a choice about how raw you want this bar to be. To retain all the nutrition, leave it raw, you can eat it from frozen, or from therefrigerator. Or dehydrate it to keep the nutrition butmaximizethe longevity. You can also bake it in the oven which will kill some of the nutrients but make it last longer and be more flexible for travelling.

The consistency of the raw bar is fairly soft, but it holds together fairly well if it’s wrapped up. The best way to eat it raw from the fridge is to break chunks off with your fingers as it can flop a little bit if you tried to bite into it. It is harder eaten from frozen. If you want to harden it up and make it more of asubstantialand portable bar, either dehydrate it or bake it.

The only thing this ‘green smoothie bar’ is missing is the water, so if you are using this as a meal replacement make sure you pack some water to take with you.

I have tried to keep the ratios of ingredients very similar to a green thickie, so that when I calculated the calories it turns out that half of this entire recipe is about 500 calories, the same as an average green thickie. So these bars can be used as a complete meal but you need to eat about half of them, or as many as it takes to fill yourself up!

UPDATE: I was just telling my husband about my green smoothie bars and he suggested I call themGreen Brickies. I love that name! So the GREEN BRICKIE is born. I’m going to get to work creating some different flavoured bars so I can have a series of Green Brickies!

Hi Katherine,

I just wanted to tell you I completed the 7 day detox and I feel so great.

I have lost 6lbs, do not feel like I need more my morning coffee, the flushing of my facial skin from rosacea has dramatically reduced and I am so excited to wake up each morning and make a green thickie for breakfast!!

I am a stay at-home, homeschooling momma of 3 littles and at times so busy I would forget to feed myself!

I would go most of the day without eating and then snack on random things.

I gained 60 pounds the last 6 years during pregnancy.

I have lost 30lbs but recently plateaued and have felt so frustrated.

I’ve tried everything from paleo and keto to the point where I didn’t know what to eat or how much and felt like even eating fruit was bad for me which thankfully it’s not!

What a game changer for me. Thank you for sharing a simple but effective program.

I’m so excited to continue another week with this plan!ThankfulStephanie

FAQs

What is the binder in granola bars? ›

Chia seeds are often praised for their binding powers. In fact, they secure ingredients so well that they can even be used as an egg replacer. Adding just a spoonful of chia seeds to your favorite granola bar recipe will make a huge difference in its texture.

How do you keep homemade granola bars from crumbling? ›

If your granola bars are falling apart or seem too crumbly, here are a few tips. Make sure you use honey or another sticky sweetener such as maple syrup in the liquid part of the recipe; this recipe calls for honey. This will help bind together the ingredients and keep that signature bar shape.

Are homemade granola bars healthier than store bought? ›

While store-bought granola bars can be unhealthy and full of added sugars, these homemade granola bars are healthy in moderation. They're a delicious and nutritious snack option compared to those that come in a package.

What makes a healthy granola bar? ›

For best results, steer clear of highly processed, artificially sweetened granola bars. Instead, opt for ones made from whole ingredients, such as whole grains, fruit, nuts, or seeds, as these are more likely to help you meet your daily nutrient needs. It's also worth favoring bars rich in fiber and protein.

What are the raw materials in granola bars? ›

A granola bar refers to a nourishing snack prepared from nuts, butter, dried fruits, coconuts, rolled oats, chocolate chips, puffed rice, and sweeteners.

How do I get my granola bars to stick together? ›

Honey – Along with the nut butter, it helps all these ingredients stick together! I love its warm amber flavor in this recipe.

What is the best binding agent for granola? ›

Nut butter is a super flavorful fat that serves multiple purposes in granola. It acts as a binding agent—along with additional coconut oil and whatever natural sweetener I've chosen—helping to pull the dry ingredients together into a wet, sticky mass for baking.

What binds granola together? ›

Flaxseed is wonderful for this, because after 30 minutes it soaks up the water, and turns into a gluey mass that will bind all your granola ingredients together. Also, flaxseed is the most concentrated source of essential omega-3 fatty acids. It has tons of fiber too.

Why are homemade granola not crunchy? ›

Bake low and slow.

Cook at 300 degrees F slowly for about 30 minutes or until it is golden brown and toasty. Cooking at too high of a temperature will likely burn the honey coating, the oats, and the nuts. A lower temperature ensures even baking for crispy, crunchy granola.

Is it cheaper to make your own granola bars? ›

Homemade granola bars aren't hard to make once you have all the right ingredients and they'll certainly save you money in the long term. It's hard to fight against the convenience and habit of picking up a box of bars at the store, but it really seems like it's worth trying to make our own.

How long do homemade granola bars last? ›

In general, most homemade granola bar recipes will last up to a week when stored in an airtight container.

Do granola bars count as junk food? ›

Often touted for their whole grain goodness, most granola bars are sticky-sweet junk food in disguise. Don't let a few oats fool you — especially when you also see marshmallows and chocolate chips. Instead: If granola bars are a must-have, choose one with 6 grams of sugar or less per bar, and hopefully some fibre.

Are granola bars healthier than chocolate? ›

In general, the results showed that cereal bars had a higher nutritional quality and slightly higher degree of naturalness as compared to chocolate bars. More specifically, the majority of cereal bars obtained a better Nutri-Score, which ranged from E to B, as compared to chocolate bars, which was E in all cases.

First, it adds a combo of whole wheat flour and almond flour (or almond meal), which act as a binder to hold the oat mixture together.

How do granola bars stay together? ›

While the oats and nuts bake, you can make the sticky glue that holds our bars together. You'll melt butter, honey, and brown sugar in a saucepan and simmer until the sugar dissolves. Mix this sticky mixture with the toasted oats and nuts. Allow everything to cool, and then toss in dried fruit and chocolate chips.

What keeps granola together? ›

Make sure that whichever granola recipe you use, it calls for some liquid, typically oil of some kind (I recommend olive oil for a subtle earthy, floral flavor, or melted unrefined coconut oil for subtly coconutty flavor). The liquid will help the chia seeds to gel, ensuring the granola sticks together.

What are the binding agents for cereal bars? ›

You can use some sticky substances such as honey, maple syrup, mashed dates, or brown rice syrup that serve as a natural sticky binder. Fruit purees like mashed bananas, applesauce, or pureed fruits like figs or prunes contain natural sugars and pectin, aiding in binding.
