This hike is entirely on the private land of the Adirondack Mountain Reserve (AMR)/Ausable Club and requires a reservation to visit – please visit their website (hikeamr.org) to learn more about the AMR's restrictions and to make a reservation.
The pilot reservation system applies to visitors using the AMR lot arriving by car, bicycle, or on foot. Indian Head Trail is located in the Adirondack Mountains in Keene, New York or 30 minutes from Lake Placid. This area of the Adirondacks is called the High Peaks region.
Rainbow Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfall settings in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. This 150-ft. tall waterfall is impressive, especially after rainy weather that swells the Horsepasture River.
At 5,200 meters (17,060 feet) above sea level, Rainbow Mountain's altitude is more than half that of Mount Everest. Those who wish to see this beautiful site for themselves must be prepared for a difficult 3-hour hike at high altitude.
Hiking Distance: 2.7 miles one way to Rainbow Falls. The trail continues past the falls for a total of 6.7 miles up to the summit of Mt. Le Conte. Trail Conditions: Elevation change of 1,700 feet; trail contains switchbacks and is rocky in sections.
Advance reservations are required to park in the lot and access trailheads through the AMR between May 1 and October 31. Reservations can be made as early as two weeks in advance. Walk-ins are not permitted. Visit hikeamr.org to make a reservation.
How to get there. This is part of the St Huberts parking area/trailhead. Leave Lake Placid on Route 73, follow Route 73 through Keene and Keene Valley and into Saint Huberts. Parking is across the road from the Roaring Brook Falls Trailhead for Giant Mountain.
