Discussion

I felt H needed a separate listing from "evolved" Mustangs I - P-51K, as it is an entirely different airplane and has no structural commonality of parts with those that went before. Although it shares some "experimental light weight heritage" it is also quite different than XP-51's F, G and J variants.

Drawings, by Thomas L. Gray. 1980. IIRC, these first appeared in the pages of American Aviation Historical Society Journal. More recently found in "Air Force Legends Number 209- North American P-51H Mustang" (by David McLaren, 2000).

Drawings are decent, however they are a bit weak in fuselage section and airfoils. Info from within the book will help fix basic components in exact relative positions. I added the airfoils and incidence notes. The sections are from UICI http://m-selig.ae.illinois.edu/ads/coord_database.html

Lots of useful, large, clear interior and airframe detail photos in McLaren's effort. Recommended, if you are serious H fan.
Back cover color top shows early fin/rudder. Lower shows late fin/rudder. Middle "red" is neat airplane, but is a bad photo-shop or crop job.

Jetco did an F-51H for U-control back in the day. Scale was approximately 1/14, around 30".

The Jetco kit was based upon James McCroskey's NATs winning model from 1956 and '57. I visited Jim back in the late 70's and got to see and hold the original model. It was still stunning despite the ravages that time can have on silk and dope finish. When Jim retired from his work at NASA Ames Research Center, there was an article in the facility newsletter abot his model and two others built by workmates. That was maybe 5-7 years ago?

The model was also the subject of a M.A.N. article with plans, prior to being kitted.

Here are the kit plans

Ive got some detail photos of H while in production. Will try to find and post asap.

That seems like a very wide prop blade. Is this a rubber powered model?

Try a company called Giant Scale Twins.. they had a .60 P-51H. Don't think canopy is scale. Everyone uses a P-51D canopy and it's wrong.

BINGO!

Except for both being of the bubble type, I feel the reason your statement is true is that a P-51D's canopy sits on a frame that is "inset" into the top of the fuselage lines, while P-51H canopy and frame simply sit on top of the fuselage.

What is the source for wing incidence? The only thing I've been able to find is +1° at root ( tip unknown ). That comes from the maintenance manual.

Sterling's F-51 is supposed to be an H model too, I think.

Good question! Looking back at what I posted earlier, I see I noted them as approximate incidence angles. Definitely playing CYA there! The Gray scale drawings, besides showing wrong airfoils, don't show any relative airfoil angles, at all. So the viewer/end user is on their own, I guess.

However, I may have posted XP-51F airfoils (with proper twist reflected in the ordinates given) in one of my earlier news letters. AFAIK, F and H share same wing basic shapes, dimensions, hinge lines, airfoils and angles etc. MM&E newsletters were linked in P-51 Evolved thread.

BTW- I have all microfilmed P-51H parts and assembly drawings (plus several H manuals) on CD and will gladly share with any serious MUSTANG student interested in in putting together some cad scale drawings of the H. I also have some very unique close up factory photos of H landing gear installations that need to be shared! Here's your chance to be truly historic and famous on RC Groups !!!
