What is Tiramisu?

Tiramisu is an Italian trifle dessert that’s typically made with layers of sponge cake soaked in espresso or coffee liqueur. Followed by mascarpone cheese and topped off with a thick dusting of cocoa powder.

This classic dessert has delicious flavors of espresso and almonds with rich cream and cocoa.

No-Bake Tiramisu Recipe

This easy tiramisu tastes exactly like a traditional tiramisu recipe, but it is much easier to make. The fluffy, creamy mascarpone cheese layer is wedged between melt-in-your-mouth ladyfingers that have been dipped in tasty coffee liqueur and cold espresso mixture. You will feel like you just stepped out of Italy!

This light and refreshing dessert is perfect for any occasion! But because it’s a no-bake recipe, it’s especially great for summer, just like my No Bake Berry Icebox Cake and No Bake Oreo Dessert. I love them for summer, since I don’t even have to turn the oven on to make them!

Combine cold espresso and coffee liqueur in a separate bowl.

Dip both sides of the lady fingers in the coffee mixture.
Pro-tip: When you are dipping the lady fingers in the coffee, you don’t want to let them soak. A simple dip is all you need. If they get too much liquid, they could cause the whole dish to be soggy.

Place the dipped lady fingers in a single layer in a baking dish.

Refrigerate for at least 3 hours, but overnight if possible.
Pro-tip: Some bakers prefer to harden the ladyfingers by placing them on a baking sheet and baking them in the oven for about 10-15 minutes at 250˚F. This is an optional step!

Variations / Options / Add-ins

  • COLD ESPRESSO: If you don’t have access to espresso, you can simply use a strong cold coffee in its place. There are tons of options for cold coffees and espressos at the store these days. They can usually be found near the milk section of most grocery stores!
  • COFFEE LIQUEUR: Kahlua is my go-to coffee liqueur for any recipes that call for it, but you can use any kind. An off brand coffee liqueur would work just fine!
  • LADY FINGERS: If you prefer, you can use sponge cake in place of the lady fingers. Just be sure to cut it into strips and bake it until it’s lightly browned.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Make Tiramisu Ahead of Time?

This is one of the things I love about this tiramisu dessert. It can definitely be made ahead of time. In fact, it’s best if made a day ahead and left to chill in the fridge overnight. That way all of the delicious coffee flavors can soak into the cookies. It can be made 3 hours up to 2 days ahead of serving.

Yes! Actually, the coffee liqueur in this recipe is completely optional. You can leave this out to make an alcohol free tiramisu dessert if you prefer!

Can I Make Tiramisu Without Mascarpone Cheese?

Some people prefer to make tiramisu without mascarpone cheese. If you are one of those people, you can use this option instead.

As a substitute for mascarpone, you can use 8 ounces of cream cheese mixed with ¼ cup of whipping cream. This will give the same texture and a delicious taste to your easy tiramisu!

How to Store Leftover Tiramisu

Cover any leftovers with plastic wrap and keep refrigerated for 4-5 days. You can also freeze this dessert dish for up to 3 months. Just be sure to let the dish thaw overnight before serving!

What is a substitute for mascarpone cheese in tiramisu? ›

You can mimic the silky, decadent consistency of mascarpone with an easy DIY recipe. To make this mascarpone substitute, mix together 12 ounces of room temperature cream cheese (1 ½ blocks) with ¼ cup of heavy whipping cream and ¼ cup of sour cream until combined.

Why is my tiramisu not creamy? ›

The right biscuits

The choice is yours, even though connoisseurs of this dessert will always tell you to choose savoiardi. In fact, the result is completely different if you use these biscuits, which are tall and spongy and absorb less coffee. As a result, the consistency will be less creamy and slightly more compact.

What is Costco tiramisu made of? ›

While a tiramisu is normally made with soaked lady fingers, this cake mostly uses coffee-soaked sponge cake with creamy mascarpone filling. It is then topped off with a sprinkle of chocolate powder, chocolate shavings or espresso beans.

Why is the bottom of tiramisu wet? ›

The cookies that make up the “cake” layers of a tiramisu are called Savoiardi, or lady fingers. These cookies are incredibly absorbent because they are made from a sponge cake-like batter. That's why when you dip them in coffee if you dip them for too long they will make your cake very soggy. Sponge cake absorbs.

Why did my tiramisu curdle? ›

Unfortunately it sounds as if the mascarpone curdled because it was whisked too much. Mascarpone has a very high fat content and so will split more easily than double/whipping cream or cream cheese.

Can I use Greek yogurt instead of mascarpone? ›

You can use Greek yogurt as a substitute for mascarpone to achieve a creamy and silky texture in dishes but in a lighter way (like in this mango mousse cake). Greek yogurt is also high in protein so has other health benefits, and can add much-needed acidity to cut through intensely sweet dishes.

Can I use sour cream instead of mascarpone? ›

Another cool swap for Mascarpone: sour cream! It's a tad different from our Crème Fraîche but still shares many similarities. Sour cream, Crème Fraîche, and Mascarpone are all very thick, but sour cream takes the acidity crown.

Is Philadelphia cream cheese the same as mascarpone? ›

Mascarpone is an Italian soft cheese made from cream with no added ingredients. It has 1) a higher fat content, and 2) a sweeter, creamy flavor. Cream cheese is an American soft cheese that uses added ingredients to make the cream a cheese. It had 1) a lower fat content, and 2) a tangy flavor that tastes cheesier.

Is tiramisu very unhealthy? ›

The Problem: High-Calorie Ingredients

Lots of whipping cream, boatloads of mascarpone cheese and the cake-like ladyfingers cookies. Some recipes call for several cups of whipping cream, but just one cup contains a whopping 414 calories and 44 grams of fat (28 of them saturated.)

Does tiramisu have to sit overnight? ›

Set. Leave the tiramisu to chill and set for at least a few hours, or up to overnight. Dust with cocoa powder before serving.

What pairs well with tiramisu? ›

Any sweet sherry style goes perfectly with Tiramisu, although pedro ximénez is great choice. Its luscious, velvety texture will pair with the soft, delicate notes of this classy dessert.

Does tiramisu harden in fridge? ›

The first few times I made homemade tiramisu I thought this too! But don't freak out, once it has some time to sit in the fridge then the filling will firm up.

Does mascarpone have to be room temperature for tiramisu? ›

Room Temperature Ingredients

One of the first steps to making the perfect Tiramisu is by making sure that your eggs and mascarpone cheese are at room temperature. Also be sure to use the freshest of ingredients. If the eggs are closest to the expiration date, then they can cause your tiramisu to break down.

Why does tiramisu need to set? ›

Chill your tiramisu for at least 6 hours.

As it sits, the ladyfingers soften and absorb the moisture and flavor from the cream.
