the only tinned food my border terrier will eat

My beloved dog is 12 and has decided that she wont eat anything else (other than my dinner given half a chance). Happy to pay the bit extra.

My Old Dog Has a New Lease of Life

After my 12 year old dog had been quite ill with gastro entiritis I switched from mid price canned dog food to this, mixed with some IAMs dried food which he's always had. The price is a bit scary but I've been surprised at the effect it's had on him. He's bouncing around again, running off on walks and hurtling round the garden after every imaginary rat - he's a terrier - in a way he hadn't done for 2 or 3 years. I can only assume it's the change of diet, as nothing else has changed. Just need a human equivalent now so I can keep up.

FAQs

Is senior dog food really different? ›

On average, senior dog foods have less protein, less fats, and higher carbohydrates than adult and puppy diets. This may or may not be a good thing for your pet. Typically, higher carbohydrates and less fat isn't a good thing and may be an indication of a cheaper dog food that uses more fillers.

What is the food schedule for a senior dog? ›

How Often Should I Feed My Senior Dog? Most people feed their dogs twice a day. But instead of facing a couple of fully-loaded bowls a couple of times a day, senior dogs tend to prefer smaller portions, served more frequently throughout the day.

What is the best dog food for a senior dog with dementia? ›

There are foods available, such as Hill's® Prescription Diet® b/d® and Purina® Pro Plan® Veterinary Diets NC NeuroCare™, that have been shown to help cognitive function in older dogs, which may be the best choice for your dog.

At what age should you switch your dog to senior food? ›

That's around the time that your dog's activity level may begin to slow down, and his metabolism may begin to decrease. His brain may also become less efficient at metabolizing glucose, which can lead to memory problems. Around age seven, you may want to think about switching him to a dog food for older dogs.

Should I feed my senior dog wet or dry food? ›

Wet Dog Food

It's easy to chew since it's soft, so it's a great food choice for senior dogs, or dogs that are missing teeth. Because it has a higher water content, wet dog food is also typically a lower-calorie choice than dry food.

Are eggs good for senior dogs? ›

Eggs are nutritious for both people and dogs. They can be tasty treats or a hearty breakfast, whether they're hard-boiled, poached, scrambled, or over easy. A cooked entire egg or yolk can be good for your dog, unless your pet has a pre-existing health condition like acute pancreatitis or diabetes.

What meat is best for senior dogs? ›

Switching to an easier to digest food in old age doesn't just ensure functioning digestion, but also a better indoor climate in your home. Lean meat, chicken (simmered), heart, eggs and a little bit of rice, low-fat curd and cottage cheese can help your dog to get its digestion back under control.

Is Purina Pro Plan good for senior dogs? ›

Pro Plan Complete Essentials Senior Formulas are optimized to meet the specific needs of dogs age 7 and older, with ingredients like glucosamine and EPA for joint health and mobility, as well as real meat as the first ingredient.

Do older dogs need 2 meals a day? ›

Seniors. As your dog gets older (generally 8+), their dietary requirements will change a bit. Just as for adults, we recommend the two-meal-a-day schedule - ideally one meal in the morning and one in the evening.

Why does my senior dog act like he's starving? ›

Why is my dog so hungry? A sudden increase in appetite in older dogs, while less common than a decrease in appetite, can be a symptom of a medical condition. Endocrine disorders such as Cushing's disease and hypothyroidism are examples of medical-related appetite surges.

At what point do you put a dog with dementia down? ›

When to Consider Euthanasia for your Dog with Dementia? It is a difficult decision to make, but some signs that it may be time to consider euthanasia for a dog with dementia include a decline in quality of life, loss of appetite, inability to control bodily functions, and increased confusion and anxiety.

What dog breeds are more prone to dementia? ›

There are no specific dog breeds prone to dementia—any dog could develop it. However, smaller dog breeds can have a higher risk of developing dementia, but this can partially be attributed to the fact that they, on average, live longer than larger breed dogs.

What can I add to my senior dogs diet? ›

Glucosamine and chondroitin help support your dog's joints, and other options include "avocado and soybean unsaponifiables" and curcumin. SAMe (S-adenosyl methionine) supports liver health, and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids can be beneficial for brain function.

What is the difference between an adult dog and a senior dog? ›

Small dogs are considered senior citizens of the canine community when they reach 11-12 years of age. Their medium-sized friends become seniors at 10 years of age. Their larger-sized colleagues are seniors at 8 years of age. And, finally, their giant-breed counterparts are seniors at 7 years old.

What makes a senior dog food? ›

Antioxidants: Senior dogs can benefit from the extra support for their immune systems that antioxidants can provide. Decreased levels of Phosphorus and Sodium: Lower levels of phosphorus can help maintain healthy kidney function, and decreases levels of sodium can help to keep your dog's blood pressure normal.

Is senior dog food less fattening? ›

As dogs age, their metabolism starts to slow down and they often become less active. Senior dog food tends to contain more digestible sources of protein as well as fewer calories and less fat per ration.

At what age is a dog considered a senior? ›

This is a general guide: Small breeds are considered senior dogs when they turn 10 to 12 years old. Medium breeds are considered senior dogs when they hit 8 to 9 years old. Large and giant breeds are considered senior dogs at around 6 to 7 years old.
