  2. instead of the rice packet, how much of regular instant rice do I use to make this?

    Reply

    • I would say about 1 cup. I don’t have the rice cups on hand to measure for you. You might want to check at the grocery store to see how much rice is in one cup.

FAQs

How to make 5 minute rice taste better? ›

Zest up your liquid: add lemon or lime juice to the water/liquid or sprinkle in fresh herbs like chopped cilantro or basil. Cook the grains by adding flavored oils (coconut oil, sesame oil, chili-infused and olive oil are some of our favorites) to the liquid.

How long will homemade rice pudding keep in the fridge? ›

Homemade rice pudding will last in the fridge for 3 to 5 days if stored properly. Allow the mixture to cool before pouring the pudding into an airtight container or a bowl covered with cling film. Do not leave it at room temperature for too long, or bacteria can form and will spoil the pudding.

How do you keep rice pudding from getting watery? ›

It's a natural process that occurs with certain types of rice. To prevent this, you can try adding a bit more liquid or cream to the rice pudding before refrigerating it. This may help maintain a softer texture when you enjoy it later.

Why didn't my rice pudding set? ›

If your rice pudding has ended up too thin, it is likely that it didn't cook it long enough at the end to thicken the custard. If it needs rescuing, pour it into a saucepan, heat, then stir in a bit of cornstarch mixed with cold water, a bit at a time, until the pudding thickens as needed.

Do you need to rinse 5 Minute Rice? ›

No, you do not have to rinse Minute Rice®.

What kind of rice is best for rice pudding? ›

Rice - I've tried all sorts of rice types and uncooked medium grain is by far the best for rice pudding, followed by risotto rice. Risotto rice (arborio) - needs extra liquid, add 1 cup (250ml) water into the saucepan with milk, and cook for 1 hr 20 minutes.

How can you tell if rice pudding has gone bad? ›

Since storage and handling conditions vary, once the package is open, it is best to eat it within a few days. Pudding that looks, smells or tastes off should always be discarded.

Is it OK to freeze homemade rice pudding? ›

Yes, you can freeze homemade rice pudding. Ladle the pudding into freeze-safe bags, leaving about an inch of space at the top to allow for expansion. Freeze flat for up to three months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight or in the microwave using the defrost setting.

Should you wash rice before making rice pudding? ›

While we've mentioned before that this dessert gets its perfectly creamy texture from the starch that is released when the grains are cooking, we do suggest a rinse for this recipe in order to wash off excess debris and added starch.

Why can't you reheat rice pudding? ›

Rice is more problematic than some other leftover foods as it may contain bacteria called Bacillus cereus, which survive some cooking processes . This bacterium is often the cause of food poisoning from reheated or cooked rice.

Why is my rice pudding so dry? ›

Why is my oven-baked Rice Pudding dry? The baked rice pudding is probably dry because the cooked rice pudding was already too dry. The cooked rice pudding must be creamy, moist, and slightly runny before cooling. While it cools to room temperature, it will soak even more liquid.

What to do if my pudding is too runny? ›

Your best bet would be to mix a tablespoon of cornstarch and a teaspoon of sugar with some of the beverage and add it to the warm pudding. Heat it to a bubble and stir until it thickens. You may have to adjust the seasoning, particularly vanilla.

Why is my rice pudding so thick? ›

If the heat is too high and the pudding comes to a boil, you'll risk the pudding curdling. Remember that the rice pudding will continue to thicken as it cools. Careful not to overcook, or you'll end up with too thick pudding.

Why did the milk curdle in my rice pudding? ›

Boiling is a sure way to curdle milk. It's not just boiling. Heating milk too quickly, even if it never comes to a boil, can also curdle it. To prevent the dairy from curdling, heat the milk gently over medium-low heat.

How do you make simple rice taste better? ›

Use Stock Instead of Water

“Instead of water, use either vegetable or chicken stock. Homemade is ideal, but plenty of premade boxed stocks exist for convenience. Add stock to the hot pan with vegetables and toasted rice.” He explains that toasting the rice first adds a layer of nutty flavor and creates more depth.

How to make good rice from Minute Rice? ›

Place water and rice in a microwave-safe bowl. Cover. Microwave on HIGH. Wait 5 minutes or until water is absorbed, then fluff with a fork.

Does Minute Rice taste like regular rice? ›

Instant rice has fewer of the calories, carbohydrates, and protein than regular white rice. The quicker cooking method can result in the rice being less firm in texture than regular rice, and the processing results in a loss of flavor, for which reasons it is disparaged by chefs.
