"This is the best Irish Soda Bread recipe ever! It comes out crunchy on the outside and soft, sweet and moist inside. I got this from an old Irish cookbook in high school to make for an Irish feast we had in history class."

  1. I'm with "better than expected" - loved it! Also made 1/2 recipe, using a 6" cake pan and baked it for 45 min. at 350. It made a really cute, small round loaf that was great for 2 or 3.

  2. OMG. Better than expected! The perfect balance of savory and sweet. So fluffy with a gorgeous crust. I sifted the flour before use and didn't have buttermilk on hand so I used a mixture of 1% milk, sour cream, lemon and vinegar. Worked a treat!

  5. My Irish neighbor made this every St. Patrick’s day when I was growing up. You use golden raisins and no caraway seeds. It is not an every day bread, it is for feast days. Mrs. Canney told us this bread Is made especially for St. Patrick’s day to break up the Lenten fast with milk, egg and butter.

It is actually Irish wheaten or “Brown Bread” that is the most popular and arguably the most delicious type of traditional Irish bread that exists. It's so common that you'll find brown bread in almost every home on the island and it's so versatile that it's offered with a range of menu items.

Why cut a cross in Irish soda bread? ›

I was always told that the cross on the top of Irish Soda Bread was to symbolize the Catholic faith of Ireland, and the Gaelic Cross. Some say it kept the Devil out, but that is what a cross is supposed to do also. Turns out that is true but more importantly, it helps in the baking of the bread.

Nutrition Notes

Whole-wheat soda bread is a healthy addition to your plate! One serving—a 1/2-inch-thick slice—provides complex carbohydrates for sustained energy, protein, fiber, and vitamins and minerals.

What do Irish eat with soda bread? ›

Irish soda bread made without sweeteners or raisins is a natural pairing with smoked salmon or smoked trout, strong cheeses like aged cheddar or the Irish Cashel blue, and as an accompaniment to bowls of hearty soup.

How to tell if Irish soda bread is done? ›

The most traditional doneness test calls for thumping the hot bread in the center to hear if it's hollow-sounding. A more foolproof indication is temperature; the loaf will register 200°F to 205°F when an instant-read thermometer is inserted in the center of the bread. Let the bread cool.

What is the shelf life of Irish soda bread? ›

Tightly wrap your leftover bread and place it in an airtight container. There's no need to refrigerate. As for how long soda bread lasts: Irish soda bread tends to dry out faster than other breads. The bread will be good for 3-4 days or up to three months if frozen.

What is Irish bread called? ›

In Ulster, the wholemeal variety is usually known as wheaten bread and is normally sweetened, while the term "soda bread" is restricted to the white savoury form. In the southern provinces of Ireland, the wholemeal variety is usually known as brown bread and is almost identical to the Ulster wheaten.

Why is brown bread so popular in Ireland? ›

In Ireland, brown bread is as common as a pint of Guinness. Most versions are made with Irish beer, too! The bread became popular many years ago due, in part, to the low cost of wheat flour. Back then, white flour was more expensive.

What is the famous Waterford bread? ›

Waterford is famous for it's Blaa, a soft white bread roll, that has a long connection to the city and county. It's said by the locals that there isn't a Blaa to be found in Waterford after midday.
